Holidays are supposed to make people feel happy. But for many of us, holidays can create feelings of sadness, loneliness or frustration. These feelings may be brought about by such things as the pressure to spend money, demands on time and the continual expectation of cheerfulness. The good news is that these “Holiday Blues” subside when daily routines are resumed. To help cope with the blues, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research offers the following suggestions:
- Budget – Decide how much money you can afford to spend before you go shopping and stick to that amount. Consider giving gifts of items you make yourself. Sometimes these gifts are more precious to the recipient because they come from the heart.
- Plan Ahead – Mark days that are best for shopping, baking, visiting friends/relatives and other events on a calendar. Try not to plan more than you can comfortably accomplish. And don’t forget to schedule time for you.
- Set Limits – Eat and drink (if you drink) in moderation. You should not feel obligated to eat and drink more simply because it’s a special occasion.
- Maintain Your Health – Get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly. You will feel more refreshed and willing to participate in the activities associated with the holidays.
- Be Realistic – Families change and grow and so can traditions. Hold on to the family traditions when possible, but let go of ones that cannot be successfully accomplished or cause undo stress. Better yet, start a new family tradition.
- Set Differences Aside – Accept family members as they are. Leave discussions about misunderstandings or differences until a more appropriate time.
- Seek Support – If you are feeling isolated or down, seek out community, religious or social services that can provide you with support or companionship.
Remember that it’s normal to feel sad, lonely or frustrated during the holidays. After all, it’s a busy and emotional time of year. Knowing how to respond to your feelings and having realistic expectations can help you cope with the Holiday Blues.
