Spirituality In Therapy: Is It An Answer?

Whenever anyone mentions spirituality, most people think about a religion such as Catholic, Protestant, Pagan, Judaism, Muslim, Zoroastrian, Buddhist, traditional Native American and other too numerous to count.  For many, spirituality is intertwined with religion, however, spirituality should not be confused with religion.  People can be very spiritual without having a particular religious affiliation.  In a simple definition, spirituality is the way that we view ourselves in relation to the world and how we express our spirit.

Keep the Faith

During these troubled and uncertain times more and more people experience the effects of trauma.  Studies show a direct relationship between the increase in relationship violence and war.  Rape and sexual assault in particular are on the rise.   Domestic violence, suicide and gang violence is also increasing.  The media reports of these incidents feed our fears and traumatic memory.  We are taught to numb our pain through addiction to alcohol, drug use, gambling, shopping, sexual behaviors, etc.  It is not hopeless though.

Children Heal Through Play
Art Therapy and Play Therapy are two ways children may access and heal upsetting events in their lives.  Linda Hunter, a Registered Play Therapist, states, “Imaginative play is used by children to resolve the past, cope with the present, and prepare for the future” “In play children find answers from within”.  A child therapist may help by being an attentive witness to this play or artmaking activity.  In being supported this way, the child most often feels heard and understood.
